Electricity distributors, Energex and Ergon Energy have opened applications for their 2022 intake of apprentices.

Minister for Energy, Mick de Brenni said 116 roles were available, including electro-technology electricians, distribution linespersons, mechanical fitters and communication technicians.

“The class of 2022 will start its training in February, joining 460 apprentices already learning the ropes with Ergon and Energex,” Mr de Brenni said.

“Because Queensland’s economic recovery is well under way, we need even more Queenslanders on the frontline maintaining our energy assets.”

He said that in the past 15 years, Ergon and Energex had trained more than 1,000 apprentices who continued to make an enormous contribution to the communities in which they lived and worked.

“The next cohort of apprentices will be entering the industry at a time of incredible change and the world-class training they’ll receive with Energex and Ergon will put them at the forefront,” Mr de Brenni said.

“I’d encourage anyone interested in the electrical trade to apply for an apprenticeship.”

The Minister said about 40 per cent of the roles will be based at Energex sites in South-East Queensland, while the remaining positions will be available at Ergon depots in regional areas of the State.

He said the diversity of apprentice applicants had emerged as a highlight and key strength of the program.

“Our most recent intake included a mix of school leavers and mature-age starters, including former Defence Force personnel retraining for new civilian careers, First Nations people and record interest from female applicants,” Mr de Brenni said.

Applications close on 16 August and more information can be accessed on the Ergon website at this PS News link or the Energex website at this link.
