All writing should be clear, concise, and correct. While basic skills of good writing are critical, you need more to meet the demands of more involved government communication. You need to be able to present every case confidently and well.
This masterclass will help you to make the most of your existing skills and practise new ones. It will also offer tips and techniques to make your writing easier, faster and more effective. Register to refine your skills, so your writing stands out, for all the right reasons.
Facilitator Bev has decades of experience in running written communication workshops for public servants at all levels and from all tiers of government. Her specialty is helping people to use (and tweak) their existing skills and experience to make writing less of a chore and deliver better results.
With an extensive background in government, education and communication, she is familiar with the challenges involved in producing excellent public sector writing.
Bev has been an English teacher, a trainer, manager and director in the public service, as well as a consultant, presenter and editor. Most days, if she isn’t training, coaching or editing for one government agency, she’s writing something for another.

The Workforce Planning Start Up Program focuses on building foundational strategic workforce planning capability across the APS.
The program is delivered over four dates and focuses on the following topics:
- Setting up workforce planning and linking to business deliverables through engagement with the executive.
- Linking workforce planning to business planning in an agile manner, and utilising labour market data to gather insights.
- Storytelling with internal and external workforce data (focus on both quantitative and qualitative data).
- Implementation of workforce planning to drive business outcomes and deliver benefits.

The program focuses on the work-level expectations and capability requirements at the APS 5 level detailed in the APS Work Level Standards (WLS) and the APS Integrated Leadership System (ILS).
To clarify the step-up in expectations, the program compares the APS 5 work levels and capability requirements with the APS 4 level.

Alumni Connect – Co-Coaching Circles

Co-Coaching Circles are an opportunity for participants to connect and continue to develop with their APS peers through real-world application of their coaching skills in reciprocal coaching ”circles”.
These sessions are designed for professionals who have engaged with APS Academy programs that contain coaching elements such as ”Coaching and Developing Others” and the ”EL2 Leadership Program”.
Participants will briefly recap the core principles of coaching and the GROW model, then engage in active application of their coaching skills. These sessions are confidential, so participants can explore these issues in a judgment-free, supportive environment with a continuous growth lens.
Each participant will have the opportunity to act as a coach, receive coaching and act as an observer, providing an opportunity for a 360-degree experience of a coaching event. Participants should bring a problem to be coached on.
This training suits participants who have completed ”Coaching and Developing Others”, the ”EL2 Leadership Program – external site”, or other coaching courses.
Essential Writing for APS 5-6 Levels

Essential writing for APS 5–6 levels is designed for APS employees who produce documents involving analysis or evidence-based argument. It is aimed at APS levels 5–6, but is suitable for all APS and executive levels who need to improve their analytical writing.
The program focuses on briefs and minutes (internal documents with advice and recommendations) and non-routine correspondence (letters and emails).

Influence, Negotiation and Persuasion for Executive Levels

This course examines aspects of influence and persuasion and the negotiation skills essential for managing and leading at the executive level.

SES Orientation Program

This program is designed for newly promoted or long-term acting SES from within the APS, and newly recruited SES from outside the APS.
The SES Orientation program enables SES to ”step up” to the higher strategic accountabilities of the role, ”step out” to take a broader systems view and engage more effectively with a diverse stakeholder group, and ”step forward” to develop more capable teams.
The program will support a new SES to take up the leadership (stewardship) and management (accountability) dimensions of their APS SES role, establishing the essential skills, partnerships and networks required for effective SES leadership.
The mindset needed to make progress on complex challenges at the SES level is promoted. The program draws on the findings of the Independent Review into the APS and recent State of the Service Reports, and reflects the leadership capabilities identified by the Secretaries Board for senior APS leaders now and in the future.
