The United Kingdom Cabinet Office has called for better Public Service training that supports managers in “leading in a more complex, interconnected, technology-driven world”.
Deputy Director of Leadership Programs Strategy at the Cabinet Office’s Government Skills and Curriculum Unit, Caroline Murray said current programs and products would change to provide unrivalled development opportunities.
Training across the board is to focus on the ‘three Ps’.
These were people skills such as leading hybrid teams, coaching and managing performance; performance skills to better cater for leading in a more complex, interconnected, technology-driven world; as well as partnership skills such as communication, team working, and working fairly and inclusively.
“The changes are intended to improve the consistency and quality of training for Civil Service leaders by providing tangible skills to better manage people, processes, money, or projects,” Ms Murray said.
“In developing this, we’re looking to the world leaders in management, but also ensuring relevance to the context of Government,” she said.
Ms Murray said that from the most junior level, people would be clear on what was expected of them as future leaders as well as what expertise and experience they would need to build, and how.
The Deputy Director said external experts would be brought in to share their experiences, alongside academic courses of study.
“Since leaders learn best from leaders, new entrants will be developed by those they look up to,” she said.
“Participants in the new programs also will hear from experienced leaders from different sectors and industries. We’ll provide opportunities to hear about how they’ve solved problems, approached new challenges, used new technologies and innovated,” Ms Murray said.
