The University of Canberra (UC) is to resurrect its annual Stonefest festival after a break of 10 years.
The university said Stonefest had been a rite of passage for students and Canberra locals for more than 40 years.
IT said it would return to the UC Refectory and UC Hub on 19 October with a line-up of local and international bands.
UC said Stonefest was born in 1971 to celebrate the laying of the foundation stone by Prime Minster, John Gorton which marked the opening of the then Canberra College of Advanced Education three years earlier. The College became the University of Canberra in 1990.
“From its inception, the annual Stonefest was a hallowed event in the Canberra gig guide as the largest and longest running festival in the capital,” UC said.
“In 2012 Stonefest returned to its pure student roots with a scaled back approach as Stone Week, but now the festival spirit has reawakened and it is ready to rock again.”
Live Music Manager at UC, Kelsey Bagust said the revived Stonefest would involve a great mix of emerging and local artists as well as some artists who had had a lot of success but hadn’t necessarily been through Canberra before.
There would also be nods to Stonefests past, with band British India returning to the festival it played at more than a decade ago.
