Research Professor at the University of Canberra (UC), Deborah Lupton (pictured) has been named number one in the world in her fields of digital sociology and the sociology of health and fitness research.
Already well established as Australia’s top-ranked sociologist, Dr Lupton’s additional accolades were revealed by the Sydney-based analyst service League of Scholars, which crunched the numbers on more than 40,000 academics in Australia to determine their academic impact and output.
“The number crunching also identified her as second in the world for medical sociology and sociocultural theory research,” UC said in a statement.
It said that, in total, League of Scholars reviewed more than 1.4 million researchers globally.
“The rankings are based on the total number of citations for academics in the past five years.
“As at 15 March, Dr Lupton had been cited 9,309 times since 2013.”
It said Dr Lupton joined the University’s News and Media Research Centre in 2014, and her research and teaching incorporates sociology, media and communication and cultural studies.
“She has authored or co-authored 16 books and has edited several others,” UC said.
“Dr Lupton is a founding co-editor of respected academic journal Health.”
