Transport tips to keep students safe

The Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate has issued a series of tips to help students navigate public transport safely and efficiently as they head back to the classroom.

The Directorate said parents and carers should make sure their children were aware of the changes in place to help keep them safe from COVID-19.

“Students 16 years and over will need to check in using the Check In CBR app on every bus and light rail service you travel on – this includes school services,” the Directorate said.

“You will be able to check in once you’re onboard at QR codes located throughout the vehicles,” it said.

“Students should continue to tap on and off using MyWay and follow all COVID-safe travel measures in place.”

The Directorate said that while no longer mandatory, the use of face masks was still encouraged for students 13 years and over when in spaces where physical distancing was not possible, such as on public transport.

It said that until further notice, cash would not be accepted on Transport Canberra buses and people must use MyWay or pre-purchased tickets from ticket vending machines to travel.

“Customers are to enter and exit the bus by the rear doors at all stops unless you require low-floor access,” it said.

“If you need to enter through the front doors, please signal to the driver.

“Drivers will not open the rear doors if there are safety concerns at locations.”

The Directorate reminded customers to spread out on buses and light rail vehicles; to consider travelling outside of peak travel times; and to always practice good hygiene.
