The Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate has set out a program of works in the city as the new integrated transport network begins to take shape.
The Directorate said work would start expanding this Sunday (4 November) to connect the light rail stop with an extended City Bus Station along Alinga Street West.
It said that by getting the City Bus Station extension under way now it would be ready for the new transport network in 2019, with light rail and more frequent bus services in a modern interchange.
“The first construction activity on Alinga Street is planned to take place on the quietest day of trade, Sunday 4 November,” the Directorate said.
“Road crews will repair the road surface to make it ready for new line marking. This will require Alinga Street between Northbourne Avenue and Marcus Clarke Street to be closed to all traffic from 8am to 5pm.”
The Directorate said buses would begin operating from Alinga Street West on 17 November.
It said these simultaneous multiple construction projects would minimise the length of disruptions.
“Northbourne Avenue works will be completed before Christmas, with the majority of small construction works on Alinga Street completed by January. The new bus shelters will be installed in mid-2019,” it said.
“The construction works will make the Central Business District of Canberra more attractive, safer, easier to get around and more enjoyable for the public, which is great for business,” the Directorate said.
