Public transport fares were not increased last January due to the cost of living at the time.

But Public Transport Victoria has advised the fares are to increase from 1 July.

“After postponing the annual 1 January CPI fare rise to ease cost of living pressures and allow the regional fare cap to be introduced as quickly as possible, public transport fares will increase from 1 July 2023,” the Agency said.

“After postponing the annual 1 January CPI fare rise to ease cost of living pressures and allow the regional fare cap to be introduced as quickly as possible, public transport fares will increase from 1 July 2023,” it said.

“The daily full fare will increase to $10 or $5 for concessions. On a weekend or public holiday, daily fares are capped at $7.20 or $3.60 for concessions.”

Under the new fares the increase will add 80 cents to the full fare daily Zone 1, Zone 1+2 metropolitan fares, and the regional fare cap.

“The regional fare cap ensures that fares across regional Victoria continue to be capped at the same amount as metropolitan daily fares.”

It said that for regional Victorians, the cost of getting around town will increase after the fare remained unchanged for the previous seven years.

“The full fare regional town bus two-hour fare will increase by 20 cents to $2.60 and daily fare will increase by 40 cents to $5.20.

“Public transport fares contribute to the ongoing operation of the trains, trams and buses on our network and ensure we network can continue to deliver a fair and sustainable service for all Victorians,” Public Transport Victoria said.
