Described as ‘effortlessly cool, suspenseful as hell and pure reading pleasure’, here’s an impressive new thriller.
The hero of this engaging crime novel, detective Miles Keller is being investigated by the New York Police Department for killing Jack Deen. It’s believed Deen, a hit man, was targeting his ex-girlfriend and former police informant Lucy Gates.
However, Keller is an enterprising fellow because on the side he uses his insider knowledge to rob criminals – those who are wealthy.
Keller’s secondary project is to intercept a payoff to a rich and ruthless lawyer playing go-between in an assassination plot. To complicate matters, a rich gangster sends LA-hired gun Bobby Deen (Jack’s cousin) to the Big Apple to locate his missing wife, Nina.
It just so happens that Nina is in the heist business, too, and temps both Bobby and Miles with her latest scheme. It was five years ago that Miles last saw her when he was investigating her for bank robbery. Then he had looked the other way for reasons he’s still trying to figure out. In the meantime, her life has grown more complicated: her husband wants her back.
The complex plot involving keeping up with their varying viewpoints – of both Miles and Bobby – is a big challenge.
Convincing dialogue and unexpected twists help compensate for minor character flaws and a surplus of heists.
