Territory gets tough on plastic waste

The sale, supply and distribution of single-use plastic cutlery, drink stirrers and polystyrene containers has been banned with the Territory’s single-use plastic ban now in effect.

Minister for Transport and City Services, Chris Steel said many businesses had already made the switch to sustainable and alternative materials.

“We know from over 900 face-to-face business visits conducted right across the ACT in recent months that businesses and our local community are keen to reduce the amount of plastic waste generated in Canberra,” Mr Steel said.

“We thank every business which has already made this switch for their eagerness to make a difference,” he said.

“It’s now important that every Canberran does what they can too, by embracing alternative products when these are provided or avoiding these items altogether if they are not needed.”

Mr Steel said a second tranche of single-use plastic items would be phased out next year including straws; barrier bags for fruit and vegetables; and all products made from degradable plastic.

The Minister said further phase-outs in 2023 were being considered for items such as plastic-lined single-use coffee cups and lids; single-use plastic dinnerware; boutique or heavyweight plastic bags; and cotton ear buds with plastic sticks.
