Temporary housing wheels in for flood victims

A convoy of motor homes have headed off to northern NSW to provide medium-term accommodation to flood-affected communities.

Minister for Families and Communities, Natasha Maclaren-Jones said volunteers from the NSW Rural Fire Service drove the motorhomes from Sydney to Northern NSW.

“More than 1,200 people have so far received emergency accommodation support,” Mrs Maclaren-Jones said.

“Government is providing a range of accommodation for people affected by the floods to help ensure no one is left homeless,” she said.

“These motorhomes will be offered to priority areas in Lismore and surrounds where many people have been displaced.”

Mrs Maclaren-Jones said Government was also working to secure longer-term housing solutions for people who wouldn’t be able to return to their homes for several months or more, and for those who needed to rebuild.

Premier Dominic Perrottet announced a joint Commonwealth and NSW Government $285 million Temporary Housing Support Package to provide accommodation support to flood victims.

“The housing support package will have the capacity to assist around 25,000 households and will be focused on allowing people to move out of their emergency accommodation and find a more permanent place to call home,” Mr Perrottet said.

“They will also have access to up to 16 weeks rental support by the end of March,” he said.

“The package will also fund on-site pods in rural areas to allow people to stay on their properties while they rebuild, and motorhomes and cabin accommodation to ensure there is flexible accommodation to meet peoples’ varying needs.”

Mr Perrottet said rebuilding wouldn’t be a quick process, which was why the State was using a flexible approach to provide people with the help they needed now and into the future.
