In a move which it hopes will attract the best brains to the Public Service, the Government of Tanzania is advertising senior positions in key State-owned Agencies.

Any qualified Tanzanian can apply to become Executive Director of the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC), Director General of the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB) or TTB Director of Marketing.

Minister of Finance and Planning, Mwigulu Nchemba said this was the beginning of a recruitment of Heads of State-owned enterprises (SOEs) on a competitive basis in an effort to boost their performance.

“Some SOEs have become a burden to the economy by solely depending on the Government for their operations, while in other countries they are a major source of Government revenue,” Dr Nchemba (pictured) said.

“I proposed that the same conditions should apply to boards of directors of these Agencies whereby successful candidates will be vetted and offered performance-based contracts.”

He said public commercial entities should at all times undertake their duties diligently, efficiently and with a clear business focus in order to achieve the values and objectives for which they were established.

Deputy Minister for Investment, Industry and Trade, Exaud Kigahe said because the TIC was supposed to attract investors, it was only sensible that the institution was headed by a person with a broad understanding of the private sector and investment in general.

“We seek to improve the Centre’s efficiency,” Mr Kigahe said.

Economist from the University of Dar es Salaam, Wilhelm Ngasamiaku said the recruitment plan would open appointment to all competent Tanzanians, including those currently working in the private sector as well as those in the diaspora.

Latest Bank of Tanzania figures shows the tourism sector is on the path to recovery from the effects of the pandemic, with travel receipts more than doubling to TZS1.54 billion ($A950,000) during the year ending April.
