A new planning competition to reimagine public spaces has been launched by the NSW Government in partnership with the Committee for Sydney.
Announced by the Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Rob Stokes the Public Space Ideas Competition encourages ideas about how public spaces can connect people, promote inclusivity and reflect the unique aspects of the city.
“So much of the pandemic has been focused on what we can’t do,” Mr Stokes said.
“This is about what we can do, about seizing the incredible opportunity we have to rethink our streets, parks and public spaces into the future,” he said.
“That’s why we want you, the people of Sydney, to share your ideas on how to improve, change and create even greater public spaces across Sydney.”
Mr Stokes said there were five categories and nine awards as part of the competition, including awards for the Best Public Facility, Best Open Space, Best Street as well as a People’s Choice Award.
Executive Director of Public Spaces at the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment, Caroline Butler-Bowdon said there had never been a better time for innovation in public space.
“We’ve seen how much value and joy great public spaces bring to people from our experience of the pandemic, but our public spaces make a difference to people’s lives 365 days of the year,” Dr Butler-Bowdon said.
“The Public Space Ideas Competition is a great opportunity to reimagine our public spaces – our streets, our parks, our community places, no idea is too small,” she said.
Dr Butler-Bowdon said the competition was open for applications until 28 August.
