One-of-a-kind homes like 7a Coast Street, Thirroul – set privately away from the street up a hedge-lined driveway – don’t hit the market often.

Rich in standout aesthetics and functional features, it is characterised by its lovingly handcrafted mud brick walls and dramatic pitched cathedral ceilings revealing recycled timber sleepers. Remote-controlled Velux skylights and Dormer windows flood the interiors with natural light.

“The owners had their hearts set on mud brick, so they completed a course on it, then hired a bricklayer and together with him, painstakingly built this house,” Andrew Hedley of One Agency Thirroul says.

Aside from adding a seamless touch of old-world charm to an otherwise contemporary home, Andrew says the mud bricks have excellent passive thermal properties. Coupled with a 10-kW solar system and a battery, he adds that the current owners “haven’t paid a power bill in years”.

“They were adamant about their vision for sustainable living, hence the low carbon footprint construction methods used,” he says.

Elevated and positioned to enjoy ocean views, the home’s flexible floor plan suits a broad range of needs.

The master suite has a modern ensuite and a large walk-in wardrobe and opens to the terrace through French doors – the ideal spot to sip a chilled beverage and watch the whales and twinkling ship lights on the horizon.

The main bathroom is tiled to the ceiling with frameless glass and features a deep shower over the tub.

A fabulous expansive loft upstairs makes an ideal home office second living space or could be converted to a fourth bedroom.

Featuring a large sit-up island bench, dual Miele ovens, Miele coffee machine, integrated dishwasher/fridge and butler’s pantry/laundry, the kitchen is a true home chef’s delight.

“One of the owners is an excellent cook with a talent for pastry making, so it was important that the kitchen was a beautiful space to spend time in,” Andrew says.

This leads to the impressive open-plan dining and lounge space, which in turn leads to the undercover sun-filled outdoor dining area.

“I can imagine many hours spent entertaining family and friends al fresco in that space,” Andrew says.

This all overlooks the cleverly terraced garden, designed for low-maintenance living and irrigated by a 5000 L water tank.

“It’s been created to enjoy but not feel like you’re labouring,” Andrew says. “The outlook is east-facing and because of the way it’s set back from the road, you’re looking past backyard, not houses, so you have a lovely open aspect to the ocean.”

The home is set on a 679 sqm block.

Other useful features include a good-sized double garage with workshop space and internal house access, an abundance of internal and external storage with a dedicated room and space under the house and ceiling fans, gas point, reverse cycle air-conditioning and a wood heater to ensure year-round comfort.

Positioned a short walk to the delights of Thirroul village, yet set in a beautiful leafy and quiet location, this unique home must be seen in the flesh to truly appreciate it.

“It is absolutely immaculate, with absolutely nothing to do except move in and enjoy.”
