Students travel for renewable skills

Ten students from the Canberra Institute of Technology have travelled through Singapore, France and Spain on a fact-finding mission to learn more about renewable technology.

Their academic and cultural experience included exposure to industry leaders and was made possible by the Australian Government’s Endeavour Mobility Grants.

Department Head of Electrical Trades at CIT, Josephine Whitfield and Electrical Trades Teacher, Stuart Butterworth led the group.

“The study abroad experience allows students pursuing electrical trades to see design examples in the application of renewable energy, including solar and battery storage, and the outcomes on business and construction,” Ms Whitfield said.

“The training CIT offers focuses on developing and upskilling a qualified workforce to compete in this emerging industry.”

She said the learning experience took the students to the Institute of Technical Education in Singapore as part of an educational partnership that fosters collaboration and educational exchanges to prepare students for the global workforce.

In France the students visited Schneider Electric, a leader in digital transformation of energy management and automation in homes and buildings.

They also visited the Paris headquarters of Neoen, one of the world’s leading independent producers of renewable energy. Neoen also facilitated the group’s visit to Cesta’s Solar Park, Europe’s largest solar photovoltaic plant near Bordeaux.

Whilst hosted by Abengoa-Algonquin Global Energy Solutions in Seville, Spain, a global leader in the socially responsible development of energy and water assets, the group visited PS10 and PS20, solar power plants that produce electricity with heliostats, or movable mirrors.
