Students in out-of-home care or living in social housing can now apply for a $1,000 scholarship from the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) to help cover educational expenses.
Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning, Sarah Mitchell said the scholarships would support vulnerable students through the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Many families are feeling financial pressure right now and it is important that our most vulnerable students remain connected to education and are given the best possible chance to succeed,” Ms Mitchell said.
In a statement, the Department said it would offer up to 1,000 scholarships to students enrolled in education or training in 2021, with applications open until 19 February.
“We know there are many bright, ambitious students who want to excel in their studies,” the DCJ said.
“But focusing on school is not always easy, especially if you’re facing challenges with your health, caring duties, home life, or the cost of education and training,” it said.
The Department said students were eligible to apply if they were studying in Years 10, 11 or 12 at a NSW high school or equivalent at a TAFE college; a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship; or a VET subject at a NSW high school.
“Students who received a scholarship in 2017, 2018, 2019 or 2020 can reapply as a returning applicant if they are still in social housing and taking on further studies in 2021,” it said.
The Department said students could use the scholarship to pay for school uniforms; course related fees; tutoring; study camps and excursions; text books and work books; internet access; computers and other materials.
