The ACT Training Awards recognised public school students for their vocational education and training achievements at this years’ virtual ceremony.

The Education Directorate said ACT Public Schools were well represented with seven of the eight finalists coming from Hawker College, Canberra College, Narrabundah College, Dickson College, Erindale College and Canberra High School.

The Directorate said Sebastian Connor (pictured) from Dickson College won the ACT Australian School-based Apprentice of the Year Award.

“Every student’s path is unique, so it’s important they have the opportunity to tailor their learning journey to support their personal goals, skills and interests,” the Directorate said.”

“Students at ACT colleges can complete a vocational course of study as part of their ACT senior secondary school certificate to attain a relevant, high quality, nationally recognised qualification that strengthens their pathways to further education and employment, this is called an Australian School-based Apprenticeship (ASbA),” it said.

“Upon graduation, students who have undertaken an ASbA will receive their Year 12 certificate as well as a qualification in their chosen field of study.”

The Directorate said that this year’s talented young nominees had embarked on certificates in a range of areas from electrotechnology and business to hospitality and hairdressing.

It said many of the finalists would take on ambassador roles for vocational education and training in schools to support other senior students to follow the path that was right for them.
