Light rail safety in Canberra is to be publicly promoted with posters and coasters using artwork created for a design competition by graphic design students at Gungahlin College.
The posters created by the students were judged by the Minister for Transport, Chris Steel as well as representatives from Canberra Metro, the Australian Federal Police and Transit Graphics.
Mr Steel said it was a hard decision to pick a winner with so many great entries, but the judges managed to choose one as well as three runners up.
“It’s great to see our local students taking light rail safety seriously and using their artistic talents to get the message out to the broader community,” Mr Steel said.
“This design competition was a partnership between Canberra Metro Operations (CMET) and Gungahlin College,” he said.
“Not only did it give Year 11 and 12 graphic design classes a chance to design real-world messaging for the light rail, but it also formed part of their curriculum.”
Mr Steel said CMET worked closely with students and provided them access to a range of useful resources, including existing digital branding assets and technical advice from local graphic design agency Transit Graphics.
He said the CMET Customer Service team also worked with the students to identify current rail safety risks and safety campaigns.
“The designs were judged on their clarity of message, local influence and overall design impact,” he said.
“The students should all be commended for their great efforts in promoting this serious and important message,” Mr Steel said.
