Starting the right way: How to begin the day as a remote worker

Jennifer Parris* says working from home can make it hard to be productive and offers some tips on how to get going in the morning.

No matter how you choose to start your day when you work from home, there are a few steps every remote worker can take to set themselves up for success. Here’s how.

Start on time (and stick to it)

Beginning every day at the same time can help set you up for success.

Having the same start time every day also helps you structure your day.

When you start your day at the same time, you’ll have a better idea of when your end time is, helping you “clock out” at the end of the day, too.

Similarly, having the same start time makes it easier for your remote coworkers to contact you.

When they know you’re usually online at a specific time, they have a better idea of when to reach out, and when not to expect a response because it’s outside your typical work hours.

Prioritise

Before you begin your workday, assess your to-do list and determine your priorities. Then, plan your day accordingly.

Skip the multitasking (if possible)

Though multitasking may seem like a more efficient way to get more done, that may not be the case.

Some studies suggest that multitasking can reduce productivity by up to 40 per cent.

Instead, focus on one task at a time to maximize your time and productivity.

Bring positive vibes

While you can’t always control what happens during the day, there are things you can do to stay positive at the start of your day to help set the tone.

For example, if reading the news agitates you, stay away from it—ditto for social media.

Conversely, consider starting your day with a quiet meditation, a walk, or whatever makes you feel happy and content.

A positive mindset at the start of your day can help you create quality work and help you maintain focus.

Practice gratitude

No job is perfect. But, working from home gives you things that many in-person jobs don’t.

Take a moment and remember all the things you’re grateful for because you work from home: work-life balance, no commute, reduced spending, to name a few.

Set up your space

No matter where your home office is (the dining room table, a converted closet, or even the garage), make sure it’s organised in a way that helps you start every day in the best possible way for you.

Start your day off right

When you start you workday off in a bright and positive way, you’ll be a more efficient, happy, and productive remote employee.
