‘Spoke up’ women spoken for

Transport Canberra has launched its annual Spoke Up for women’s health program, set to run from 5 to 11 September, during national Women’s Health Week.

Transport Canberra said Spoke Up was an initiative of its Active Travel Office and supported Women’s Health Week to encourage more women to experience the multiple health benefits of riding a bike.

“Women make more short trips within their local area than men, but half as many ride a bike,” Transport Canberra said.

“And women often don’t make time to prioritise their health.”

It said that in these uncertain times, riding a bike was a great way to get where someone was going, at the same time as getting some exercise, reducing gas emissions and connecting with the community.

“Riding a bike can be daunting if you haven’t done so for quite some time.”

Transport Canberra said that as part of Spoke Up it wanted to provide fun, informative and COVID-safe activities for women; address the unique barriers faced by women to help them ride a bike for everyday trips; and find out more about women’s cycling needs.

It encouraged Canberrans to get involved and host an activity in their workplace, community or business for Spoke Up.
