ACT Fire & Rescue (ACTF&R) is seeking to find the next generation of Canberra’s firefighters before applications for its current round of recruitment close next week (19 July).
Commissioner for the ACT Emergency Services Agency, Georgeina Whelan said ACTF&R was looking for individuals who reflected the professionalism, dedication and core values of the Service.
“Being a firefighter can be a fulfilling career for intelligent, fit, community-minded people ready to accept the challenge,” Commissioner Whelan said.
“A career as a firefighter with ACTF&R is varied – it involves responding to fires and various incidents including medical emergencies, motor vehicle incidents, all types of rescue, natural disasters and hazardous material emergencies,” she said.
Commissioner Whelan encouraged people from a broad range of backgrounds to apply and said she hoped to see more of the ACT community represented in the next recruitment college.
Acting Chief Officer for ACTF&R, Matthew Mavity said the current Ready. Willing. Able. campaign had been generating plenty of interest in a career as a firefighter within the ACT community.
“We have received a great level of interest from the community, with current firefighters hosting Q&A sessions for potential recruits, providing them with all of the information about the role and life of a firefighter,” Acting Chief Officer Mavity said.
“We have hosted multiple come-and-try sessions and bootcamps over the past few months outlining and educating community members on the necessary skills, capabilities and talents potential applicants will require to undertake the varied work that our firefighters do,” he said.
Acting Chief Officer Mavity said that in the current COVID-19 climate, the general public could not visit stations to talk to firefighters so, ACTF&R had posted a video of one of its recruitment question-and-answer sessions online.
He said applications for this round of recruitment were open until Monday 19 July.
