South Australia has partnered with the NSW and ACT Governments to establish a new international forum which aims to help solve the practical problems of reaching net zero emissions.
Announced by the Minister for Environment and Water, David Speirs, the Net Zero Emissions Policy Forum announced during COP26 in Glasgow, is a collaboration designed to help sub-national jurisdictions to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
Mr Speirs said the Forum would provide a suite of policies and resources that could help members reduce their emissions and grow their economies.
“To combat climate change on a global scale, we need to speed up the transition to net zero and solve the technical, economic and policy problems of getting there,” Mr Spiers said.
He said the Forum’s purpose would be to provide a repository of existing policies and resources that could be accessed by participants; facilitate collaboration between Governments to design policies to achieve net zero emissions; and enable problem solving to address policy challenges and speed up the transition to net zero.
“We are encouraging sub-national Governments around the world to join and help create the low carbon jobs and industries of the future while making sure we leave a better planet to our children and grandchildren,” Mr Spiers said.
He said the Forum was connected to the Under2 Coalition, a group of more than 220 sub-national Governments, and would be supported by the Climate Group and ClimateWorks Australia.
The Minister said it would be directed by a Ministerial Group which would set the priorities for research and collaboration.
