Religion and State together at last?

In a perfect world we wouldn’t need a debate on the Religious Discrimination Bill.

But the government has assured us the legislation will protect religious expression from being discriminated against.

But the draft has us deeply divided.

Martyn Isles as the head of the Australian Christian Lobby and Fiona Patten of the National Secular Lobby had plenty to say for and against the proposed Bill at the National Press Club.

Too far or not far enough?

Like a good dinner party when politics and religion are not discussed this will be a topic to fire up dissenters on both sides, but tolerance and reality have to be remembered.

Across the capital, a party was in full swing for the opening night of the musical West Side Story.

And while it’s a favourite for many and brings back memories of violence, intolerance and gangs of many years ago, we’ve learnt that none of it resolves anything but we all have to make efforts to make things work.
