Sydney Trains has launched a recruitment drive to hire a record number of new apprentices with 90 positions on offer.
Announced by the Minister for Transport, Andrew Constance and Acting Chief Executive at Sydney Trains, Suzanne Holden, the apprenticeship program is described as an opportunity for people to develop life-long skills in the rail industry.
“Sydney Trains maintains a huge network covering more than 1,500 kilometres and a variety of skills are required to keep the network moving,” Mr Constance said.
“I really want to encourage anyone interested in learning and developing their trade skills to apply,” he said.
He said the apprenticeships were available across seven disciplines including telecommunications; signal fitting; signal electrical; substations; rail traction; plant mechanic; and high voltage cables.
He said all apprentices received nationally recognised trade qualifications.
Ms Holden said apprentices would learn the skills needed to help maintain infrastructure like overhead wires, escalators, bridges and tunnels, the signalling system and the train fleet.
She said previous apprenticeship intakes had included people who’d chosen a career change from professions like teaching, as well as people returning to the workforce for the first time after parenthood.
