Proposed new laws setting out how Australian Government Agencies are to manage the information they hold have been released by the Office of the National Data Commissioner (ONDC) for public comment.
According to ONDC, the proposed new legislation is aimed at helping Agencies modernise how they manage the wealth of information they hold, promoting its better use and reuse.
In a statement the ONDC said the Data Availability and Transparency Bill created an accountable and transparent scheme for safely sharing public sector data through controlled access to the right people, for the right reasons, with strong safeguards in place.
“As part of the legislative package, the ONDC has also released a discussion paper on the draft Accreditation Framework,” it said.
“Accreditation is just one safeguard built into the data reforms to promote safe, transparent and accountable data sharing which benefits the Australian public.”
The Office said the Bill and its supporting materials were the result of more than two years of extensive engagement during which the ONDC listened, learned and improved the policies that underpinned the legislation.
The ONDC will use a range of digital platforms to engage with stakeholders, including hosting a webinar about the data reforms,” it said.
The consultation period closes on 6 November.
Details about the webinar, and the legislative package, as well as how to make a submission, can be accessed on the ONDC’s website at this PS News link.
