The Public Sector Commission (PSC) has launched a pilot project to collect information about Western Australia’s public sector workforce.

With information being collected now, the PSC said the Public Sector Census Pilot was introduced to gain greater insight into the size, shape, composition, integrity, diversity, capability and leadership of the Western Australian public sector.

The Commission said staff from 17 entities had begun testing the methodology, the systems and the processes of a census of the entire WA public sector, designed to deliver a user-friendly digital survey experience which takes just 11 minutes to complete.

“If you work for one of the participating entities, you will receive an email with a link to the census,” it said.

“Alternatively, there will be posters in your workplace with a QR code which you can use to access the census through a mobile device. Your manager will assist you with planning your work to make sure you are able to complete the census.”

The Commission said participation would help to ensure the statistical process was thoroughly tested, and any identified issues resolved before a sectorwide census is implemented.

It said the project would help it better understand the public sector’s people and highlight important areas for public sector development.

The entities participating in the pilot this week until 28 March are the Departments of Premier and Cabinet; Finance; Treasury; Justice; Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries; Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety; the Public Transport Authority; the Insurance Commission of WA; Main Roads WA; Central Regional, South regional, North Metropolitan and South Metropolitan TAFEs; WA Country Health Services (Geraldton); WA Police Force; WorkCover Western Australia and the PSC itself.

The Commission said the sample for the Census Pilot was designed to include employees from a diverse range of backgrounds, locations and job types to ensure the questions, systems, processes and usefulness of the data could be assessed.

It said data from the pilot would be provided to the leaders of the participating entities.
