Australia Post is installing advanced Point of Sale (POS) systems across 3,600 Post Offices, allowing customers to pay with wearable and mobile devices.
The initiative is also likely to provide better accessibility for those with vision and hearing impairments.
According to Australia Post’s General Manager of the Post Office Network, David McNamara the new system will feature a larger display and touch-screen, allowing for larger font-sizes and digital imagery with the new devices processing the latest in payment technologies, including Apple Pay and Halo rings.
Mr McNamara said the technology boosted digital services in Australia’s largest retail network.
“We have continuously embraced and adopted new technology throughout our 209-year history, making sure we are inclusive of all of our customers from those who are new to technology and those who want faster payment systems,” Mr McNamara said.
“The system includes the latest in payment hardware and software technology, improved usability for those with special needs, and reliability.”
He said it was designed for a host of future capabilities, including the ability to digitally sign on screen when collecting parcels and registered letters.
Mr McNamara said customers had already taken advantage of the new payment methods.
“It’s great to see our customers can now access the latest in payment technology across our retail network,” he said.
“With payment methods constantly evolving we’ll now be able to meet our customers’ future demands and expectations.
He said the POS technology was expected to be implemented across all Post Offices by the end of this month.
