ACT Policing has issued a reminder that motor vehicle break-ins and thefts tend to rise over the winter period.
Superintendent at ACT Policing, Stephen Turnbull said simple precautionary measures could decrease the likelihood of a vehicle being damaged or stolen.
He said car security should be every driver’s priority over the next few months.
“Ensure your car doors and boot are secured and locked and all windows are closed; don’t leave valuables in your car, including your wallet or phone, even if your car is locked,” Superintendent Turnbull said.
“Never leave a running vehicle unattended or unsecured, even if you are defrosting your windscreen; unfortunately, this can be the perfect opportunity for theft.”
He said anyone who witnessed suspicious or unusual activity was urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the website.
Superintendent Turnbull said information could be provided anonymously.
He said in the event of vehicle damage or theft, people should contact police on 131 444 and should then provide to the officer who answers the phone the following information: the vehicle’s registration number, its make, model, colour, distinguishing features and the time and place of the offence.
“Further vehicle and home security tips can be found on the ACT Policing website,” Superintendent Turnbull said.
