Police release new road safety video

ACT policing has released the latest video in its Who Are You Rushing To Meet? campaign which was launched last November.

The police’s Superintendent, Road Policing and Emergency Management and Planning, Corey Heldon said the video showed a scene where a police officer, at a residential front door, relayed the news that a person had died in a car collision.

Supt Heldon said it was unfortunate that police needed to keep repeating their road safety message.

“We do this because we don’t want to attend serious collisions due to people driving at excessive speeds, or driving under the influence,” Supt Heldon said.

“Already in 2021, ACT Policing members have had to deliver heart-breaking news to the families of four people who have died in road collisions,” he said.

“When we ask ‘Who Are You Rushing To Meet?’ we want drivers to think about the people they could meet if they choose to speed.”

Supt Heldon said people speeding on ACT roads could end up meeting police, fire fighters and ambulance officers at a collision, the trauma doctors and nurses in hospital or, in the worst case scenario, a funeral director.

The video launch coincided with the announcement of ACT Policing’s Traffic Focus for April, the ‘Fatal Five’, which focused on the most common contributing factors to fatal vehicle collisions on ACT roads.

Supt Heldon said the Fatal Five were speeding; alcohol and drug impaired driving; not wearing a seatbelt; intersections; and driving whilst distracted
