NSW Police have concluded a high-visibility operation for the 42nd annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade in Sydney’s CBD.
Operation Commander, Assistant Commissioner Tony Crandell said Operation Mardi Gras 2020 involved general duties officers, the Public Order and Riot Squad, Operations Support Group, Mounted Unit, Dog Unit, Aviation Support Branch, Licensing Police, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, and Police Transport Command.
“Officers were conducting patrols along the parade route and in surrounding areas to ensure a safe and secure environment for the community,” Assistant Commissioner Crandell said.
“NSW Police also took part in the parade and celebrated 30 years since the creation of the now LGBTIQ Liaison Officer (GLLO) role, which was created in 1990 to support gender diverse police officers and the community,” he said.
Assistant Commissioner Crandell said 2020 marked a significant milestone for the NSW Police Force in building strong relationships with LGBTIQ communities and organisations.
He said that during the operation, police arrested 13 people for offences, including assault, affray, and drug possession.
Assistant Commissioner Crandell said the event saw more than 12,000 people take part in the parade as over 190 floats moved along Liverpool, Oxford and Flinders streets in a colourful celebration of rainbow pride and diversity.
