ACT Policing officers joined NSW Police on Lanyon Drive last week (20 May) as part of National Road Safety Week as part of an operation to target speeding vehicles.

With seven road fatalities for the year at the time – It’s now 10 – and 11 last year, ACT police believe they’d experienced their fair share of loss.

ACT Road Policing’s Detective Acting Inspector Paul Hutcheson said road safety needs to be in focus every week.

“Too often we work with our counterparts to respond to incidents that can be avoided,” Detective A/Inspector Hutcheson said.

“While our priority is to always keep people safe, there are preventable situations that result in the loss of life and go on to negatively impact families, friends, the community and our officers for some time,” he said.

NSW’s Monaro, South Coast and Hume regions have suffered a total of 20 fatalities since the beginning of 2022.

NSW’s Hume Highway Patrol Acting Inspector Michael McKechnie said NSW Police would continue to work alongside ACT Policing to keep road users safe on both sides of the border.

“Remember that your destination will always be there,” A/Inspector McKechnie said, “slow down to ensure that you, your passengers, and other motorists can arrive safely.”

He urged drivers to rest assured that if they were doing the wrong thing while behind the wheel on either side of the border, they would be caught.

Both police services said they would continue to maintain a strong joint presence on our nearby roads, with particular focus on enforcing the new 40km/h limits when passing emergency vehicles whose lights are displayed on the side of the road.
