ACT Policing is to focus on the safety of commuters this month, with a distinct message each week for different groups of commuters.
Detective Acting Inspector and Officer-in-Charge of Road Policing at ACT Policing, Paul Hutcheson said the month-long campaign would focus on cyclists in its first week, to be followed by public transport passengers, drivers and pedestrians.
Detective Acting Inspector Hutcheson said officers would be on the lookout for drivers who put cyclists at risk and cyclists who took chances with their own safety.
“Cyclists don’t have the protection that a car body provides in the event of a collision,” Detective Acting Inspector Hutcheson said.
“Cyclists know this, and other road users know this, but we still see riders and drivers taking risks on our roads,” he said.
“We know getting to work can be a rush, and we understand the temptation to hurry home after a long day, but safety should always be everyone’s number one priority.”
Detective Acting Inspector Hutcheson reminded drivers to be aware of cyclists in the cycle lane, especially when turning at intersections, and asked cyclists not to put themselves at risk.
He said cyclists should secure their bikes, both at home and work, and register bikes on Crime Stoppers’ Bikelinc database to increase their chances of getting it back if stolen.
