ACT Policing is reminding Canberrans that school zones are back in effect this week as some students head back to the classroom for Term Four.
Officer in Charge of Road Policing, Detective Inspector Donna Hofmeier said the 40km/h speed limits were once again in effect in school zones between 8am and 4pm on weekdays and hefty fines applied for exceeding the limit.
“Although the current health orders mean there are less cars on our roads, school zones are not the place to become complacent,” Detective Inspector Hofmeier said.
“Drivers are reminded to stay alert, slow down and obey the sign-posted school zone speed limits,” she said.
“These speed limits are in place for a reason – to protect our children around schools.”
Detective Inspector Hofmeier said people caught speeding in a school zone could cop one demerit point and a $321 fine if they exceeded the limit by 15km/h or less; three demerits and a $477 fine for 15km/h to 30km/h over the limit; four demerits and a $799 fine for 30km/h to 45km/h over the limit; and six demerits and a $2,136 fine for travelling more than 45km/h over the limit.
She also reminded parents, guardians and teachers to protect themselves and their children during school drop off and pick up by wearing a mask, maintaining good hand hygiene, physical distancing and using the Check In CBR app where required.
