Police dogs earning welcome retirement

South Australia’s Police dogs have barked goodbye to five of their colleagues who have retired in the past year after completing 2,187 deployments between them.

According to the Police, the five apprehended a total of 661 offenders and cleared 847 offences.

“PD Havoc also located 110 property items worth almost $14,000 in total,” the Police said.

Police member of the Dog Operations Unit, Sergeant Peter Crouch said the police dogs played an important part in a variety of police operations.

“Police dogs do a 14 week training course and once they graduate they are required to maintain monthly training standards and do annual skills tests to ensure they are still capable,” Sergeant Crouch said.

“The job of a dog handler is 24 hours a day, with the dogs becoming part of the family so it’s always difficult to see them retire,” he said.

He said three of the five Police Dogs – Havoc, Judge and Stoic – are to have a rest from their duties of criminal apprehension, property location, missing person location, and handler protection.

“Police Dogs Indi and Yoyo were part of the drug, firearm and explosive team,” Sergeant Crouch said.

“We thank PD Havoc, PD Judge, PD Stoic, PD Indi and PD Yoyo for their service to the community and know they will have an enjoyable retirement,” he said.

He said the five’s operational duties had been taken up by five new additions to Dog Operations so there has been no impact on service delivery to the community.
