Police aiming at dangerous driving

ACT Policing is to target dangerous behaviour on Canberra’s roads this month, focusing on red light safety, hoon behaviour and ‘burnout’ activity.

Detective Acting Superintendent Donna Hofmeier said the police were concerned with a small number of drivers who put other road users at risk and would use a range of tactics to identify those doing the wrong thing.

“While the majority [of] our drivers do the right thing each day on our roads, there is a percentage that are choosing to do things that are dangerous to other road users and themselves,” Detective A/Superintendent Hofmeier said.

“We’ve had a number of incidents in just the past week that included failing to stop at intersections, excessive speeding, driving on the wrong side of the road and failing to stop for police,” she said.

“We are also examining some recent videos posted online of hoon behaviour and over the next couple of weeks, some of the people shown breaking traffic laws can expect to receive infringement notices.”

Detective A/Superintendent Hofmeier said motorists needed to recognise that red lights were a key safety feature and not a hindrance that could be ignored.

She said, on average, more than 5,500 infringements were issued by police and fixed cameras each year.

“We will be employing a range of methods to identify those drivers doing the wrong thing – and this is where the community can assist,” she said.

“Please let police know about dangerous driving behaviour when you witness it; if you have dash cam footage you can provide that to us to assist in building a picture of a driver’s behaviour,” Detective A/Superintendent Hofmeier said.
