The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications has called for public comment on proposed amendments to the management framework of Australia’s radio spectrum.
According to the Department the spectrum is a “finite resource that is essential in today’s digitally-networked economy” and is in need of modernisation.
“Management of spectrum is legislated under the Radiocommunications Act 1992,” the Department said.
“However, the technological landscape has changed significantly since the Act was first introduced,” it said.
“In October 2019, the Government committed to developing a set of targeted amendments.”
The Department said the proposed amendments included clarifying the object of the Act; streamlining the spectrum allocation and re-allocation processes; improving flexibility and reducing regulatory barriers between licence types; better reflecting modern spectrum needs and supply chains; and introducing a modernised compliance and enforcement regime.
“Spectrum is an essential resource in a digital society and it must be efficiently managed in order to support the social and economic benefits that come from our rapidly-changing technological landscape,” it said.
“All industries rely on spectrum, either directly or indirectly,” it said.
