Plain sailing for ACT water utility

Icon Water says Canberrans can expect an uninterrupted water supply during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the utility changing its workforce to protect supply and its staff during the health crisis.

In a statement, Icon Water said it was working with the relevant ACT Directorates and Water Services Association Australia to ensure best practices were in place for continued supply during the pandemic.

“We can assure you that there are no impacts to the quality of your water or wastewater services due to COVID-19,” Icon said.

“The community places a lot of trust in us to do this and it’s a job we take seriously.”

It said it had enacted its Emergency Management Response team in March.

“While a large percentage of our employees are working from home and have been since mid-March, our team on the frontline, including those in the field and in our plants, must continue to be out in the community to maintain and manage our water and sewer network,” the utility said.

It reminded Canberrans to be aware of COVID-19 restrictions and social distancing measures around Icon Water equipment and crew.

“It’s important that you don’t approach our crews while they are completing works in your area and maintain social distancing at all times,” it said.

“Our crews are there to keep your water running and your sewer flowing, and we must protect them.”

“We’ve been through many challenges as a community – droughts, bushfires, and now COVID-19 – and we’ll continue to place the safety of our community and our employees at the forefront of what we do each and every time.”

It also said that ACT residents facing financial difficulty as a result of COVID-19 should get in touch to discuss payment options for water bills.
