A trial project by Roads and Maritime Services allowing vehicle owners to obtain a pink slip at a time and place of their choosing is to be expanded to include five more communities.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Paul Toole said the trial was designed to determine whether mobile safety inspections could be delivered to customers safely and effectively across the state.
Mr Toole said the trial was running across all of metropolitan Sydney as well as Wollongong, Shellharbour, Kiama, Central Coast, Cessnock, Newcastle and Port Stephens.
“From December the trial will be further expanded into regional areas including Wagga Wagga, Tamworth, Port Macquarie, Blue Mountains and Southern Highlands,” Mr Toole said.
“We know this option appeals to many younger motorists and families, with the ability to save time and get an inspection done at home or at work the big draw cards,” he said.
“The rollout of this trial is a real win for regional communities, with mobile safety inspections for cars, motorcycles, boat trailers and caravans able to be done by an authorised examiner.”
Mr Toole said the fee for the pink slip was a fixed amount, equivalent to what a customer visiting an authorised mechanic would pay.
Minister for Transport and Roads, Andrew Constance said the trial started in April last year in response to one-third of surveyed consumers indicating they would use the mobile pink slip service.
“In the first 16 months of the trial we saw 4,297 mobile pink slip services completed,” Mr Constance said.
