Photos highlight ACT through different lens

ArchivesACT has chosen a series of photos from the Surveyor-General photographic collection as its Find of the Month for August, showcasing the bush capital from a bird’s-eye view.

Archives said the collection demonstrated the integration of the suburbs, bush and buildings, along with the development of the lakes and river systems in the South, Central and North Canberra regions.

It said photos from the collection of the Australian-American Memorial The Eagle in Russell showed how the monument was part of the design for Canberra and was the first hallmark of the Russell precinct.

“The Eagle consists of a 73-metre pillar, with a sphere and eagle placed on top, which alone measures 11 metres,” ArchivesACT said.

“The wings of the eagle help give this monument another of its nicknames – Bugs Bunny,” it said.

“The monument still retains its visual significance and can easily be viewed across the lake, amongst trees and buildings.”

Archives said other highlights of the collection included a photo of the Australian War Memorial and Old Parliament House, without Lake Burley Griffin between them; construction of the suburb of Isaacs; Cockington Green Gardens; a fish-lens photo of Lake Burley Griffin and London Circuit; and a photo of Jamison Pool in the suburb of Macquarie, depicting the iconic splash tower with wrap-around slides.
