The Department of Health is extending the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to Western Australians aged 60 and above.

This means all residents of the State aged 12 and above will be eligible for the Pfizer vaccine.

The Department said however that in line with advice from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI), people aged 60 or older who had already had a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine should continue with AstraZeneca for their second dose, as different vaccines could not be mixed.

It said that to date more than 84 per cent of people aged 60 and older had received their first doses and more than 60 per cent of people 60 and older were fully vaccinated.

Announcing the change, Premier Mark McGowan said the State’s COVID-19 vaccine program had grown swiftly following various vaccine blitzes.

“I want to thank everyone who is on the front line or working tirelessly behind the scenes to get more people vaccinated to protect us from COVID-19,” Mr McGowan said.

He said the move followed an earlier extension of Pfizer vaccinations to children aged 12 to 15.

Mr McGowan said there had been more than 1.9 million vaccinations administered to Western Australians across the State and the newest State-run vaccination clinic had opened at the Centrepoint Shopping Centre in Midland.
