Perth plan to boost city living

The State Government has given approval to the City of Perth’s plan for the future that includes a significant increase in the number of people who live and work there.

Lord Mayor, Basil Zempilas said the city now had a clear strategy, guiding how it would grow in a sustainable way over the next 10-to-15 years.

“Under our vision, we’ll see the number of city residents almost double to 55,000 by 2036. We’re giving developers certainty around where they can invest and highlighting the areas where we need more infrastructure to support residential growth,” Mr Zempilas said.

“For example, the need for a primary school in the City of Perth by 2026 was identified in the Strategy, with a possible East Perth site recently announced.”

He said the city was establishing incentives for residential developers and buyers to accelerate student housing, build-to-rent and build-to-sell development opportunities in the inner city.

“The City of Perth is leading the way on putting Perth first with developers, investors and buyers through a range of rates and fee incentives,” Mr Zempilas said.

“From 1 July through to 30 June 2030, buyers of new properties can access an enticing 50 per cent reimbursement on residential rates across three consecutive years, which is an estimated annual saving of nearly $1,000.”

He said the Strategy also identified the need for a public high school by 2036; key areas for future high-density living; an increase in affordable housing options, and incentives for environmentally sustainable development.

“We’re so pleased the WA Planning Commission supports our ambitious plan, which will undoubtedly make our city a more liveable, prosperous and sustainable place to live, work and play,” Mr Zempilas said.
