Parks Victoria is to conduct a program to control feral goats in the Mallee region between 15 and 20 March.

Parks Victoria said closures would occur in parts of Murray Sunset, Wyperfeld and Hattah-Kulkyne National Parks, Murray-Kulkyne Park Annuello, Wathe as well as Bronzewing Flora and Fauna Reserves.

“Victoria’s parks are home to more than 4,300 native plants and 948 native animal species,” Parks Victoria said.

“Parks Victoria regularly undertakes dedicated conservation programs, designed to contribute to habitat restoration or predator management across all its parks,” it said.

“These programs include activities such as monitoring of grazer and plant populations, revegetation, spraying, controlled burning, and animal control programs.”

Parks Victoria said highly skilled professionals would undertake the operations, which were thoroughly planned and carried out under strict conditions designed to ensure safe, effective and humane practices.

The Agency said closure signs would be in place at all major entry points and its representatives would patrol the program area and park entrances during the closure.

Total Grazing Management Coordinator at Parks Victoria, Brendan Rodgers said early autumn was the ideal time to carry out feral goat control operations, before the goats dispersed across the landscape and were harder to find.

“This operation is a key element of several environmental restoration programs currently running across the Mallee,” Mr Rogers said.

“This program is the next step in over two decades of work to restore the Mallee landscape following a century of grazing, timber removal and the impact of introduced species,” he said.
