Police are reminding motorists planning to sell their cars online to be cautious following a recent spate of crimes involving the theft of vehicles advertised on social media platforms.
In a statement, SA Police gave the example of a victim who advertised a vehicle for sale on social media and then agreed to meet the buyer at their home address in Modbury.
It said the victim met with two men, one of which produced false evidence of a bank transfer before taking his Mazda 3 for a test drive. The men failed to return the car, which was located in Munno Para some days later.
In a further example, another victim advertised their vehicle for sale on social media and then agreed to meet the buyer at their home address in Magill.
Once again two men produced false evidence of a bank transfer before taking the 2010 blue Holden Commodore sedan. The men failed to return the car which is still missing.
“We are reminding the public to be vigilant when selling items through social media platforms,” the Police said.
“Be conscious that fake internet banking records can be created and do not hand over items until you see the funds arrive in your account.”
It said a meeting with potential buyers should be at a safe place, preferably during daylight hours.
“Proper identity should be sighted and retained with consent until the vehicle was returned from a test drive,” the Police said.
