NPWS opens its parks for new advisors

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is calling for interested people to join one of eight Regional Advisory Committees to provide input into how the State’s national parks are managed.

Executive Director at NPWS, Rob Smith said the chance to become a committee member only came around every four years and was a unique opportunity for people who were passionate about NSW’s environment and heritage.

“We are looking for people with experience in a broad range of areas, including conservation, heritage, agriculture, ecotourism, environmental education and science,” Mr Smith said.

“Each committee covers a different part of NSW and includes at least two Aboriginal representatives who have an association with that Country,” he said.

“We are particularly keen to receive applications from a wide range of people with different backgrounds and life experiences.”

Mr Smith encouraged people living with a disability, young people, people from different cultural backgrounds and even first-time park visitors to apply for the Advisory Committee positions.

The Executive Director said that while there were no essential criteria for those wishing to nominate, it was expected that applicants would have a strong connection to the national parks in their region.

“National Parks cover around nine per cent of NSW and are for everyone to enjoy, now and into the future,” he said.

“That’s why it’s so important our Regional Advisory Committees reflect the diversity of the NSW community.”

Mr Smith said the Committees met at least four times a year, either in person or online, and additional meetings and site inspections to national parks and reserves may be required.

He said successful applicants would be appointed by the NSW Minister for Environment and Heritage for up to four years, commencing 1 July.

Applications for the NPWS Advisory Committees have been extended to next Wednesday (11 May) and further information can be accessed at this PS News link.
