Schools are being encouraged to get themselves involved in this year’s Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee to promote literacy in an entertaining and engaging way.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison urged all schools to become involved and register for the Bee.
“Literacy is so critical to a young person’s education in Australia,” Mr Morrison said.
“It provides the fundamental base to develop other skills, and the tools to embrace the joy of reading and writing,” he said.
Mr Morrison said the free competition was fun, exciting and would help students learning literacy to build their confidence.
The Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C) said this year’s spelling bee would be conducted through a digital format rather than face to face.
PM&C said the Spelling Bee was due to commence in 2020 but was postponed due to the pandemic.
It said schools could register for the national spelling bee until 24 March, with the competition set to run in Term One of this year for children in Years Three to Eight
“It will be held at school level in March, with finals for each State and Territory taking place in April,” PM&C said.
