Transport for NSW has launched a metropolitan and regional “COVID-Safe” plan to ensure the practice of physical distancing on public transport as the Coronavirus restrictions across the State are reduced.

Minister for Transport and Roads, Andrew Constance said that for the foreseeable future, the public transport system would not run as usual and the current low patronage levels were already close to the safe capacity in the peak.

“Everyone will need to maintain physical distancing during this pandemic,” Mr Constance said.

“That means if you are not already using public transport during the peak times, please do not use public transport during peak periods,” he said.

Mr Constance said distinctive green dots would be placed on trains, buses and ferries to show passengers the safest places to sit and stand.

“A ‘No dot, no spot’ will see passengers asked to wait for the next service,” he said.

He said the transport plan also included encouraging people to avoid travel during peak times; deep cleaning throughout the network; boosting available parking; increased cycling and walking options; and increased services.

Mr Constance said customers would also be given real time information through apps, social media and the Transport for NSW website to see which services had space available to maintain physical distancing.

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Paul Toole said communities needed to work together to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and he stressed the importance for anyone feeling unwell not to travel.
