New transport a virtue for patients

The Emergency Services Agency has opened a new, expanded patient transport facility for people in need of non-emergency medical transport.

Located in Kambah, the new facility provides non-emergency patient transport to and from aged care facilities, hospitals, clinics and private residences.

Performing the official opening, Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Mick Gentleman said the service was an invaluable and often unseen part of the ACT Ambulance Service’s work that accounted for around 20 per cent of its caseload across Canberra.

“The Kambah facility replaces the old Curtin facility and is larger and better equipped to help keep up with increasing demand for services as our city grows,” Mr Gentleman said.

“We provided $891,000 funding towards the upgrade. Eight new staff and a new vehicle have been rolled out with the new facility to enable more services each day and better support for bookings, including on weekends.”

He said the Kambah facility was providing crews with a more comfortable and functional base that was better suited to their day-to-day work.

“It will help ensure the ACT community continues to receive high quality patient transportation services,” Mr Gentleman said.

“The ACT Government remains committed to the safety of the community and the emergency workers that provide assistance during times of greatest need.”
