Young Victorians are to enjoy better access to opportunities and support for recovery from COVID-19 under the State’s first youth strategy.

Releasing its Our promise, Your Future: Victoria’s youth strategy 2022-2027, Youth Central said the five-year plan committed the State to 74 promises covering health and wellbeing, safety and security, achieving goals, respect and involvement, and responsive services.

“The youth strategy recognises that all issues that matter to Victoria, matter to young people,” Youth Central said.

“Over the next five years, our work will build on and strengthen existing work, better coordinate efforts to improve what we achieve, and set out new ways of engaging and supporting young people,” it said.

“Implementation of the Youth Strategy will be guided by an outcomes framework and young people and the youth and community sectors will continue to be involved and keep us accountable.”

Youth Central said it would set up an advisory group with equal membership of young people and youth sector partners to advise Government and guide implementation of the Strategy, while also seeking feedback from young people through surveys and consultations.

Welcoming the Strategy, Minister for Youth, Ros Spence said it was developed in consultation with more than 2,000 young people, sector partners and community members.

“Under the Strategy, young people with lived experience of mental ill health will be directly involved in the design and delivery of a new mental health system that responds to the needs of young Victorians,” Ms Spence said.

“We’re ensuring young people are empowered to address the issues that affect them,” she said.

“The Youth Strategy ensures that young people’s voices are heard at every level of Government.”
