New pay deals for infringing drivers

The Road Safety Commission is to introduce a new traffic infringement processing system to provide motorists with more options to manage and pay their fines.

Minister for Police and Road Safety, Michelle Roberts said that for someone in financial difficulty, the new system would give greater flexibility, including allowing for the part-payment arrangements or payment extension options for the first time.

“Legislation is being drafted to support the new system’s improved features and funds have been allocated for these important reforms,” Ms Roberts said.

“The new system will also allow people to manage infringements online, including nominating the driver and viewing the evidence.”

She said businesses would be asked to provide information about contemporary solutions to inform the new system’s design through a Request for Information managed by the Commission.

“Road safety cameras are an important tool to change driver behaviour, but I’ve long believed that giving people the ability to part-pay their infringements is a necessary option for those who break the law, but have difficulty paying the fine,” Ms Roberts said.

“That’s why I asked the Road Safety Commission to overhaul the system and laws and provide people with more options.”

She stressed: “We are not going light on people who commit these offences, we are developing an effective and fair way by which they can pay their debt to society.”

The new system is expected to be operational in 2023.
