The Minister for City Services has announced that construction is under way to establish three new nature play spaces for children around the city.
The Minister, Chris Steel said the play spaces were in Eddison Park and Farrer in the Woden Valley and Glebe Park in the city.
He said the new nature play spaces were bringing a variety of high quality natural play experiences to more parts of the city
“Ultimately these are spaces for children, not adults, and it’s been great to have the expert input of children in the design of the play spaces they will be using,” Mr Steel said.
He said the natural play areas added to Canberra’s extensive playground network and built on children’s imagination and curiosity, providing opportunities to develop their social and motor skills.
“Natural play spaces provide unstructured play experiences that encourage creative and imaginative play, using primary elements from the landscape such as logs and boulders to encourage kids to climb, balance, jump, explore and develop their coordination skills,” he said.
“The nature play space at Eddison District Park in Woden will have a sand and water theme for younger kids that provides an opportunity to touch and manipulate the flow of water.”
He said that in n Farrer there would be a range of zones for children to explore, including areas for climbing, scrambling, and hiding.
“The nature play space designed for Glebe Park will be built in the elm tree forest near the existing play space and park rotunda,” the Minister said.
“It will include a dry gravel creek bed with water pump and sand play tables, a tree house with ramp, ladder and fireman’s pole and an adventure course of ropes, net and beam.”
He said two additional nature play spaces were also being planned for the Kambah District Park in Tuggeranong and Yerrabi Pond in Gungahlin.
